What happens in a Reiki session?

A Reiki practitioner giving a session to a client.

For many people, there’s a natural curiosity about Reiki. People often feel drawn to it, while at the same time wondering what actually happens during a session.

It’s not always easy to explain, partly because the experience is often much simpler than people expect.

When you arrive for a Reiki session, there is first a chance to settle and arrive in the space. We spend a little time talking about what may be present for you physically, emotionally, or mentally before the session begins. (There’s nothing you need to prepare beforehand, and nothing you need to bring with you.)

You’ll then be invited to lie down fully clothed and simply rest. During the session, I place my hands gently on different areas of the body, while at other times the hands may hover slightly above areas such as the eyes, throat, or lower abdomen. The approach is quiet and non-invasive, and there is nothing you need to do during the treatment.

For many people, this can feel unfamiliar at first. We’re so used to trying to fix things, analyse what we’re feeling, or actively do something. Reiki is different in that sense. The invitation is simply to rest and allow yourself to receive.

From the outside, a Reiki session can appear very simple. Internally though, people often notice shifts beginning to happen. Some people experience a deep sense of relaxation, while others notice warmth, tingling sensations, mental quietness, or a feeling of drifting in and out of sleep. Sometimes very little seems to happen during the session itself, and that too is completely normal.

It’s also not unusual for emotions to surface gently during a treatment. Not necessarily in a dramatic way, but as a quiet release or an awareness of something that has been sitting beneath the surface for some time.

One of the things many people find surprising about Reiki is that the session doesn’t follow a fixed script. There is no specific outcome being forced or directed. Instead, the process is guided by an openness to whatever may be needed in that moment—whether that is deep rest, emotional release, clarity, or simply stillness.

In that sense, Reiki is less about something being “done” to you and more about creating the conditions for the body and mind to settle into balance naturally.

After a session, people often describe feeling calmer, lighter, clearer, or more grounded. There is also space to talk about your experience afterwards if you would like to, although there is never any pressure to explain or analyse what came up for you. Sometimes the effects of a session continue unfolding over the following hours or days.

And perhaps that is the simplest way to describe Reiki. For a short time, you are given a space where nothing is being asked of you. A chance to pause, rest, and reconnect with yourself a little more deeply.

If you feel curious to experience this for yourself, you can book a session here in Bali—a chance to slow down, rest, and reconnect with yourself.

space to slow down, rest, and gently reconnect with what is already there.
