A question mark on a wooden block on a desk against a background of soft lights.

People often wonder whether they should book a Reiki or hypnotherapy session. Both can be incredibly effective, but they support people in different ways and suit different needs. Rather than asking which is better, it may be more helpful to ask: What kind of support am I looking for right now?

Over the years, I've worked with many people who have benefited enormously from both Reiki and hypnotherapy. Some come to Reiki seeking balance, clarity and emotional support during a challenging period of life. Others are looking to overcome a specific fear, habit, or limiting belief and find hypnotherapy particularly helpful. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, which is why understanding the differences can help you choose the approach that best meets your needs.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a subtle yet powerful Japanese healing practice that promotes relaxation and supports the body's natural ability to heal and restore balance. While Reiki is often sought for stress reduction, it can also support physical and emotional well-being, self-awareness, and personal growth.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation and focused attention to access the subconscious mind and identify the root cause of limiting beliefs, negative thought patterns, and emotional reactions. It is commonly used for anxiety, confidence issues, fears and phobias, stress management, habit change, and personal development.

How Does the Experience Differ?

One of the biggest differences between Reiki and hypnotherapy is the experience itself.

Reiki sessions are generally quiet and receptive. After your initial consultation, much of the session takes place in silence. There is no need to say anything or to analyse any sensations you may be experiencing.

Hypnotherapy sessions are more interactive. In the pre-session chat, we explore issues that may be presenting in your life. During the hypnosis portion, we remain in constant dialogue as we explore the root cause of the issue and release what needs to be released.

A simple way to think about it is:

Reiki is more about receiving and rebalancing.

Hypnotherapy is primarily about engaging, releasing, and rewiring.

Different Routes to Change

Although Reiki and hypnotherapy work differently, both can lead to meaningful change.

During Reiki, people sometimes experience emotional release, shifts in perspective, physical sensations, or a deep sense of relaxation. Often the changes are subtle and continue to unfold over the following days.

With hypnotherapy, change tends to occur through working directly with the subconscious mind. Clients often gain new insights, discover the root of a problem, or experience shifts in thinking and behaviour that support lasting change. There is typically a 10-12-day integration period after the session during which shifts continue to be observed.

Both approaches can help you access a deeper level of awareness beyond the constant chatter of the conscious mind.

Reiki Might Be Right for You If...

  • You feel stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained

  • You struggle to relax or switch off

  • You are recovering from a difficult period in your life

  • You are looking for a gentle and supportive approach

  • You want to reconnect with yourself

  • You are interested in personal or spiritual development

Many people come to Reiki not because they want to fix a specific problem, but because they feel the need for rest, balance, and space to breathe.

Hypnotherapy Might Be Right for You If...

  • You want to change a specific habit or behaviour

  • You struggle with anxiety, fears, or phobias

  • You want to improve confidence or self-esteem

  • You feel stuck in recurring patterns

  • You have a clear goal you would like support with

  • You are looking for practical tools to create change

Hypnotherapy can be particularly helpful when there is a specific issue you would like to address or a clear outcome you would like to achieve.

Can Reiki and Hypnotherapy Be Combined?

Absolutely.

In fact, many people find that Reiki and hypnotherapy complement one another beautifully. Reiki can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and create a sense of inner balance. Hypnotherapy can then help explore and transform the underlying thoughts, beliefs, and patterns that may be contributing to the issue.

I also combine Reiki and hypnotherapy within the same session when appropriate. Reiki can provide a gentle sense of support and grounding during emotional release work, while hypnotherapy can help uncover the underlying beliefs, memories, or patterns that may be contributing to what arises during a Reiki session. Together, they can offer a powerful combination of insight, healing, and transformation.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong choice.

I tend to think of Reiki as creating the conditions for healing, while hypnotherapy helps us explore and transform the patterns that may be holding us back. Both can be powerful, and often they work beautifully together.

Reiki and hypnotherapy are not competing approaches. They simply offer different pathways to healing, insight, and personal growth. Sometimes one approach is clearly the better fit. Sometimes, both can play a valuable role at different stages of your journey.

The most important thing is finding the support that feels right for you at this moment in time. And if you're still unsure, that's perfectly normal. Sometimes a conversation is all that's needed to help determine which approach is most likely to support you.
